Instantly looking at the mirror, we all think about the glazy appearance at once, unknowing about the fact that whether they are really healthy or not? But it’s more important to look at the state of our gums. Gums disease, or more commonly known as “periodontal disease”, affect about 80% of the people at some or the other time point.
Gum disease occurs when plaque, a jelly like film of bacteria cling to the teeth and irritates the gum, resulting in inflammation. The first sign is normal bleeding of the gums around one or more of the teeth and often there are no more symptoms until years later when teeth become wobbly and ultimately fall out as the ligaments attaching the teeth to the bones are affected. Sometimes even the bone itself is affected, which worsens the situation. The early stage of gum disease when gums are inflamed and bleeding occurs is known as “gingivitis”. This dental problem can be easily spotted as the gum color changes from healthy pink to a duller color. It can be easily spotted by a dentist.
Gum diseases can affect person of any age, but is especially prevalent among elderly people as they produce less saliva.
