How to use the # on social media platforms

April 24, 2017 by admin

Hashtags have been a prominent part of the culture for more than a decade now. The majority of social media platforms and apps are using hashtags, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and even Google+. The main purpose of hashtags is categorizing content you come across on social media. The hashtag also allows you to connect and engage with other users with similar interests. Using hashtags, with proper knowledge is going to allow you to grow and empower your presence on social media networks.

Things you should consider when using hashtags

The first thing you probably should do is figure out your target audience. You should look to be as specific, as possible, as reaching the audience that is passionate about a specific niche or theme is going to require you to delve deep into the subject matter. By targeting an audience, you are going to get better engagement, as well as presence growth, as a direct result.

You should be aware of the fact that different social networks use the same fundamental principles of hashtags, but the exact methodology varies from one social network to another. Instagram and other video and photo sharing networks focus more on the actual description of the content, while twitter uses hashtags for the topics of different conversations. The best possible way to go about incorporating hashtags into your daily social media routine is to do some light research on each and every network you are planning to use.

Coming up with relevant hashtags that are not branded can prove to be a tricky task, yet in the end, it is more than worth the effort, as hashtags of that kind are going to drive traffic to your social media network and ultimately your website, too.

Many brands use branded hashtags to further promote their brand on social media. Sometimes you can also gain some benefits by using the hashtags of the brand for the purposes of your own promotion.

Things to avoid when using hashtags

Using hashtags that are too stretched out or complicated will probably have an effect that is opposite of what you’ve initially intended. Hashtags that are too long are not going to be of much use, as nobody wants to type in a bunch of characters when they are searching for something.

Another rookie mistake people make is that they use an excessive amount of hashtags that often surpasses the actual amount of content words the post has. You should look to avoid overloading your posts, whether it’s a small article piece or a photo, as that can have a negative effect on targeted audience, in the long run.

You should be weary when it comes to using hashtags on everything you post. If you are sharing some news, then there’s no actual need for the hashtag to appear, especially if the original piece of content already has hashtags. However, if you are sharing a piece about the impact the news article made, then you should definitely add some tags. Figuring out the ins and outs of hashtags can prove to be quite tricky and sometimes it would be best to leave that to a professional digital marketing agency, such as Adeo Internet Marketing.
