Precision Fabrication – Types of Machining

April 26, 2013 by admin

Machining basically means the process of removing materials from a single piece to form it into a desired shape or object. This can be done using a number of tools. These tools also make up for the different types of machining in the market. Machining will range from CNC machining, which is a form of precision machining, to robotic welding. There are different kinds of tools used in machining including boring tools for creating holes, cutting tools used to cut off pieces of the materials, drilling tools for creating parallel holes, and grinding tools for creating fine surfaces form finished materials. There are also a number of machining technologies used to create objects.

These include:

Laser cutting. These use Nd-YAG and CO2 lasers mostly. The lasers are guided using special machines to cut of chunks from the materials. These usually work for precision machining processes. They are also used for marking and designing writings on metals parts.

CNC machining. This involves the use of computers to guide the cutting of materials. CNC machining uses a G-Code that is installed in a computer and is used to reflect a design and pass the laser though it to cut away materials. CNC machining has become famous and more applied with time for the ease and the cheap nature it presents when creating prototypes. Making prototypes before would have been a very costly affair for any designer or inventor. This form of machining is the most precise in the industry creating parts for sensitive machine used in the air craft and automobile industry.

Oxy-fuel Cutting. This is the use of gases like gasoline, acetylene, propane and hydrogen to cut away materials. Combinations of these gas and heat raise temperatures that enable the materials to be cut away.

Plasma Cutting. The plasma torches work by creating an electrical arc to cut away materials by transforming inert gas to plasma. This is mostly done on electrical materials that need precise work.

Water jetting. This is the use of a powerful stream of pressurized water to cut through materials. These streams could also be laced with abrasive material to corrode away the surfaces.

Electric Discharge Machining. Also known as EDM, it uses electrical discharge to cut through materials. These cut using micro-craters formed by electric arcs discharged from a controlled source. It only works on materials that can conduct electricity.
